Aberfan by Janet Williams

A silence has descended

On this land of song.

The air is thick with anger

That the Coal Board got it wrong.

The streets disrupt with strangers,

The press and television crews.

A slag heap slips and Aberfan

Is international news.

The children were all gathered

In the hall to pray.

The parents now are asking,

“Where was God that day?”

Grown men here are weeping,

A sight that’s never seen.

The village is preparing

For a visit from the Queen.
